iPHONE 3GS vs HTC HERO. WHO WINS?

There is a  very interesting comparison of the iPhone 3GS and the HTC Hero from IPHONE HELP:

“…Let me begin straight with the verdict on this one – HTC Hero comes very close to beat the Apple iPhone 3GS, to an extent it does excel in some parts, but the Android platform and the Hero hardware just fall short of being a clear winner in this case. Now whether its the Android OS that lacks something or the hardware has less horse power is your call, but the overall experience with the iPhone is still somewhat better than the HTC Hero.     Having said that, the Hero is certainly a lovely device and the looks are stunning! Going forward the Hero convinces me that the next HTC running Android 2.0 might well be an iPhone Killer for sure.

HERO is powered with Android V1.5 (Cupcake), which brings in a lot of things including an onscreen keyboard. The iPhone QWERTY is great and the HTC Hero though very good, is not really a great in that department.

The uniqueness in the HTC Hero comes from the Sense UI which is pretty well structured to go against the iPhone multitouch interface.  The iPhone 3.0 OS coupled with all the App store goodies is still heavy for Android to match upto.  However HTC has managed to get the most out of Android Cupcake.  The HERO integrates Facebook, Twitter and Flickr streams already(though the official Facebook app isn’t out yet). The inbuilt browser in HTC Hero supports Adobe Flash and thats something the wonderful Mobile Safari still cant do. Though we have heard about slow and slugging performance of websurfing on the HTC due to flash, it still looks good.

HTC hero packs in a better loudspeaker and impressive battery life. It also matches up to the iPhone with a teflon quote to the white version and a similar oil resistant oleophobic coating to the LCD. AGPS, Digital Compass, Accelerometer etc its all there! With a better GPU the iPhone 3GS certainly delivers better gaming experience (the App Store is a big advantage).

HTC Hero packs in a 5MP camera which produces stunning results. But both these phones fail to accommodate a flash light. The usual iPhone drawbacks like bluetooth file transfer, non usability of disk space via USB mass storage, memory card slot and non-removable battery gives the HTC Hero some edge.

I would rank the iPhone 3GS as the best but the HTC Hero is certainly my favorite.

I would agree it is a very close run thing but I believe the HTC Hero is the superior phone, not just on looks but on functionality, far more customization and a better apps service.
Early reports shot the hero down on a laggy control system but there is none of that.
I think the only thing that lets the HTC Hero down is the camera, it is not great and of course there is no flash but then the Iphone is in the same boat.
Is it an Iphone killer? probably not but it is superior.
I think the question is do you want innovation, a slick control system with a sleek design or do you want to follow the crowd?
You make your own choice.

So the Teflon coating only comes with the white version of the HTC Hero?

I was under the impresion all the Heros came with it…

Definitely, HTC Hero is the iphone killer. Killer looks, killer design, killer camera, killer touch….The Apps store on htc may be lagging behind iphone’s app store BUT since htc has just arrived, we will surely get more in the future.

Used it. Nothing special. iPhone has nothing to worry about. Only people who have no way of getting an iPhone will claim it’s superior. It isn’t. iPhone is still way ahead of anything else out there.

Best part of HTC Hero…It’s not an iPhone! There’s a large open source community that will unleash itself shortly with Android. It is always exciting to see creativity flourish with the open source community. Good things always emerge and not just pretty icons to impress your ‘omg it’s soooo coooool’ girlfriend.

Also, a lot better data plans and call quality cuz you’re not with At&t.

First of all. Nothing can kill the iPhone. Everything that came out after the iPhone is just an iPhone copy. None of these new phones are origanilly good. All they did was take all the iPhone features and improve on them. They need to come out with their own style and stop being an iPhone copy. Even all the new phones look just like an iPhone. They are copying the iPhone style. Get your own! They are too similar

I agree, all the new phones are just like an I phone. They are not original. All of them have an app store just like the I phone, they also have all those fancy apps that the I phone has. But the iPhone has wayy better apps tens of thousands of them. And if the new HTC was better than the I phone then it would sell out across the world like the i phone did. I can go to a store and get a htc anyday of the week when it first comes out. But when the i phone first came out I had to wait months for it. People slept outside for the phones at stores. The HTC, Blackberry and any other phones cannot accomplish that. The I phone broke records, made magazine covers, and there is a whole world created for iPhone users on the Internet. The HTC or blackberry does not have such a large commuinty for them. People lie, numbers don’t. And the iPhone has numbers to prove it’s way better than anything else. Think about it. If it was not the best phone then why would it keep selling out everywhere. And if you don’t believe me. There is an app for that!

The Hero is an almost perfect device, but browsing with the iPhone is much more laptop-like. The huge disappointment for me is that the Hero won’t tether with a Mac. I’m fed up with companies that in this day and age continue to ignore Mac users. I need tethering for my work. With the iPhone it’s as simple as hitting an on/off switch. So I have both devices, and I’m prone to stick with the iPhone just because of the tethering issue. It’s too bad, because the Hero is a gorgeous phone that does it all.

I’m still really torn between these two phones. 3 are trying to entice me to stay with them by offering a good deal on the Hero but I have a hankering for the iPhone! I guess ideally I’d like to be able to road test the two of them together to see which one I prefer. I’ve had a quick play on both and prefer the general slickness of the iPhone but prefer the ‘keyboard’ on the Hero. I don’t know!

I stood in line on Nov 5 at the Telus store to get a new iPhone 3Gs. This is my first iPhone. It is a slick unit with a very responsive interface. The app store is loaded with great applications. It is very fast opening apps and really impressive with the speed that it loads and renders web pages. However, the main thing that I need is to be reminded of appointments and notified of new email and text messages. The iPhone, for all of its great qualities, unfortunately falls way, way, way short in this critical and basic function.
The phone ringer can play downloaded music, but the new text notification has only a few options. The notifications for voice mail, email and calendar alerts give you no option to select the sound and most importantly, the sounds that they do play are short, quiet and only play once. I have missed the notification for almost every appointment and message since I got the phone. Unless someone can tell me quickly how to change these sounds, I will be returning the iPhone and getting a Hero.

Written By Don on November 12th, 2009 @ 8:09 am

It is easy to change that option on the iPhone. Just go through the menu or you can jailbreak the iPhone and make it play any song or sound you want. The app in the jailbreak menu is called tonefx
iPhone is the best phone. It has no REAL challenge

I’m actually thinking about getting the iphone despite the drop call in NYC. I was checking out the HTC hero on my way home and find it very inpressive. Right now I’m puttin all my emphasis on the iphone due to it’s domination of the apps.

Open source.

i think that the iphone has just been well marketed over the years, and that everyone thinks that it’s the best and they have to go out and buy it……the hero performs the way it should and it has it’s advantages over the iphone and vice versa….the thing is at&t has the worst service on earth and probably more dropped calls then any other service I’ve ever had….. it’s like buying a ferrari and putting 87 octane fuel in it… you do the math

I have both mobiles and the range and smoothness of multi tasking on the HTC Hero makes my iphone look dated.

The HTC HD2 (which my wife has) is really so far in front of the iphone it’s scary but at this moment in time is held back by early bugs, things have moved on.

Iphone vs HTC Hero…

Most of the iphones “bad” points can easily be fixed by jailbreaking it.

Jailbroken Iphone = Phone Domination

I have had the Hero since it came out, and just got the iphone 3gs, and to be honest the Hero is far superior in what it can do, yes the iphone is nic to use, but it has too many limitations. Also if you the iphone exactly as it is now was made by Nokia or any other manufacture people would just say it is an ordianry handset.

Written By Paul on December 5th, 2009 @ 4:19 am

I have played with every version of the iphone since it has come out. Between my family members, customers, workers, and friends i have had plenty of experience with the iphone. The one thing i can say is the Iphone build quality is very solid but besides that it just could not keep my interest. I recently have had time to play with the HTC Hero and the Samsung Moment. I would have to say the Hero is the most entertaining and solid phone that is out at the moment. Everything is intergrated very well and the phone feels very well built the only thing i would have liked to see is a faster processor “moment & Dragon” and a OLED screen “moment”. Both would be very nice to have but really is still not a downfall of the Hero just a wish list on my part.

Anyway the Hero IMO is leading the way and when/if the Dragon comes out the Apple better do some catching up.

I’ve got both phones at the moment, trying to decide which to keep. I’ve had the 2G, 3G and now the 3gs, and used to have the G1 before buying the Android. The iphone for me is easier to use, a much easier phone to operate. The size for me is perfect, easy to use with any hand whether that be thumbs or fingers. The Hero can be fiddly as the buttons in are in awkward places, try pressing the back key with your thumb if your holding it in your right hand, it’s tricky!

The iPhone keyboard is far better, it just works better, you can mash away at it not particularly accurately but it’ll get the right letters, the Hero i’ve frequently had to delete chunks of text and try again. Also not having a shift key to activate numbers is a pain, it’s either a long press (too long) or having to switch to the numberpad screen and then back, either way it’s too long compared to the iphone.

I love the build quality of the Hero, for me it’s a much nicer and expensive feeling phone, the teflon backing is great and the phone feels solid, the iphone’s plasticy and cheap in comparison.

Battery life for me the Hero by far, my iphone lasts a day where as I can get out of the hero with the same amount of useage.

The camera in daylight the Hero wins hands down, it’s quick and great quality. Low light the iphone wins easy, video for the iphone as well, it’s a great little recorder, the hero is ok but not smooth enough and the sound quality isn’t great. Useable, but compared to the iphone it’s a no brainer.

Apps? App store for apple does have TONS of apps yes, and the thing that makes it hard for me is every other company out there is developing for the iPhone, if I did the swop to the Hero how annoyed would I be everytime a new app comes out that i wish was out on the android? Plus the iPhone has tons of duplicate apps that do the same thing or are just pretty useless. The android apps tend to be more focused and actually do useful things. (Check out Locale app, it’s awesome and Torrent Fu!)

Having said that the Android does have a well stocked app store. The iPhone apps I tend to download and use once or twice before deleting, where as the Android apps tend to stick around the phone as there have more longevity to them.

Little things like Google Talk I like, I think all phones should be able to run a chat client WITHOUT having to be loaded, the Hero does this great. I have BeeJive on the 3gs which will alert via Push Notification but it’s not the same, you still have to load up the app and wait for it to refresh messages.

So still torn at the moment, if I could get the Android OS + Sense UI of the Hero with the ease of use of the iPhone it’d be perfect.

You could easlily bash any phone when the information you are giving out is not even half way true. the only way to get the true info is to either a. buy the phone. or b. go to the website and check it out for yourself. the i phone is by far a good phone but is limited.

Ok i hav just bought a htc hero with sprint and it is just like a portable computer, does everything i need it 2. One thing ur not gona get with the iphone 3gs is a 5mp camra. But thats just the beginning because the htc hero has everytging the iphone 3gs has, yea a lot of people say that the hero is just a copy, well here is some news for them. What thr e iphone doesnt hav but the hero does: 4g network, 5mp camra, small frame, adobe fp, and free apps, see most applications are about 99 cents to about 2$, but. Htc hero apps are almost all free. So i will continue 2 like the htc hero. Better than the 3gs iphone. Oh and the hero just looks better!! And the iphone is just ugly!!

okay first of all IPHONE KICKS ASS! It beats the hero BY FAR!Excellent battery life, amazing amounts of apps, over 100,000! Keyboard…way better, doesn’t lag on typing fast and both landsce and portrait mode it’s easy to text no matter what ur using finger or thumb! Browser is way faster on performance, who cares about flash that’s what mobile pages are for! Iphone has landscape in every application and it’s performance is by far 3 times faster! For gosh sakes it has AN IPOD! The best music playes ever!! The touchscreen is amazing and always has been from the start! Camera is bright and perfect! Not to forget about video recording! I LOVE THE IPHONE WAY MORE BY FAR! HTC HERO SUCKS AND WILL NEVER BE ANYWHERE NEAR THE IPHONE! And if you don’t believe this, just like our good company says, THERE’s AN APP FOR JUST ABOUT ANYTHING!

ok seriously all the iphone owner keep saying that every other phone is copying the iphone look? how? all other touchscreen phones have a touchscreen so i guess that that means its an iphone look alike, cuz the htc hero looks nothing like an iphone nether does the eris, plus they have a track ball does the iphone?… no they dont so all that is a load of poop, plus the text messageing on the iphone sucks cuz when a long message is sent from a iphone to a different kinda phone the message always come in scrambled and you have to sit there and take the time to read all the messages and try to put them in the right order. the htc DOES have voice control and navigation, my girlfriend has a iphone and ive seen the navigation on it and it is truely the worst ive seen. the htc hero is completely customizable as the iphone is not. iphone is pretty much just a fashion statement, sure its gotta alot of apps but android is coming out with thousands of more apps daily. but someone said something about jailbreaking a iphone, yeah than you can do the same stuff as the hero but your phone with lag so bad it almost unbearable. but if iphone was truely great than why would you have to jailbreak it for it to be any good? OH,the hero doesnt have update flaws like the iphone, when my girlfriend got the upgrade for picture messageing it screwed her phonee up for a couple of days till the made another update to fix an update, kinda lame dont you think? anyways i just wanted to voice my opinion

I need to throw some mud at you guys that think the iphone is something orginal. The Palm devices where the first real smart phones. Everything that came after that(including the iphone, Android, Blackberry etc.) is just a Palm copy. So, get your history right and quit being such iphone snobs.

Ok, i get it. A lot of people are on iphone jock strap. 100,000 apps…..I mean really! Do you need all of them? Will you use all of them? NO!!! HTC is only draw backs are the web surfing as stated it can be sluggish. The App store IMO is fine and I know it WILL get better. I have no use for that many apps. My celly is important in my work. But I don’t live off it.

As one comment said……you have to jailbreak the Iphone to be able to do more with it….LAME!!!! Why do i wanna jailbreak a phone to get more out of it when i just paid 4bills for it……NOT!!! Not to mention, Apple and ATT not stupid(hence 2g, 3g, 3gs) the keep coming out with new iphones cause they new the android line was coming out and the had to keep up with the technology. The only thing keeping ATT with a pulse is the frickin iphone. So bang on HTC Hero all you want, But I bet there will be more and more people with the HTC in the long run and the iphone will fade away.

Oh yea, and Just cause some of you stood in line to get a iphone when they came out, don’t mean you or the phone is special. Maybe thas why ATT dang near giving them away with a 2yr contract agreement($49-$99). Next there gonna be free like the crackberry is with a 2yr contract.

I’ve had 2g and 3Gs, I’m bailing on it tomorrow for a few reasons. I’m tired of the orwellian big brother attitude of Apple. I’m really tired of all the dropped calls and call failures on ATT.
The iphone has one advantage in that it can do data and voice at the same time. BUT the Apple ATT solution to dropped calls is TURN OFF 3G. Which does help. But when your on the Edge network getting data it automatically sends ANY call directly to voice mail. So your choice is dropped calls or no calls. Seriously??!!
And ATT plan is 60/month more expensive if you add in all the included Sprint items as well as sprint gives a 20% business discount. So for 80 bucks I get everything voice/data/text/GPS voice nav and a higher rated network for call quality along with a lost or broken insurance for 7 bucks. VS iphone 70 for unlimited minutes, 35 for data, 20 for texting, 10 for navigation and 13/month applecare which only covers broken issues, not lost.

The iphone is nice, but it’s not worth 720 dollars more a year for subpar voice

how is every phone that now comes out an iphone copy? htc were making touch screen multi media phones whilst apple were still playing with there nanos! when the iphone came out i wasnt overly impressed as i already had a phone that had all the same functionality. where the iphone succeeded was user interface, very nice very simple, also the app store. i own a hero and an iphone 3g for work, so i have a balanced view, the iphone is visually more stylish without a doubt, but i got to admit, the hero has a user interface that seemed to be designed by a god. the thing is unreal in terms of usability. i have found absolutely no flaws with it. again, the camera thing, why have a camera with no flash?? stupid really but hey. they could have made the hero a little bigger so touch screen typing was a little easier but the interface for text is fantastic so no worries about tapping the wrong keys. to be honest, the iphone is really just a basic blank platform with a massive app store to upgrade it, as for the hero, it slaps the iphone silly with usability, its very interesting and exciting to customise. you really dont get bored with it. dont be just another iphone sheep, go for something fresh. the hero certainly wont let you down.

The reason I am reading these site comments is to determine which phone to go with. Our IT manager suggested the HTC and I was originally thinking about the iphone so he suggested I look at the comparisons. I have read all the comments and have made the decision to go with the HTC. It seems most of the iphone comments are just followers to which I almost became that don’t really have much to support the iphone other than “everybodys buying them so I should too”. There was a boat load of money spent to market the iphone whiched lured all the zombies in to line up to buy them which obviously worked for them. My son has one and I thought it would be simple to have him around to refer to if needed to help me out with using the phone but I think everyone has their our needs to which they will decide which phone is best for them. The iphone seems in a nutshell to be very limited, more costly, not as nice looking….etc…etc. I’m glad I looked into it further.
