MOBILE DEVICES: PRICE DOES MATTER

June 17th, 2008 Mike Hornet Posted in ASUS, HTC, Shift, iPhone No Comments »

When you are as big as HTC, you are always being challenged.  When Apple announced the US$199 price for the new iPhone 3G, HTC stock took a beating.  This forced HTC to have a relook at their price structure by lowering prices of their existing models for the Asian markets.

shiftvsasus.JPG

HTC entered the UMPC market with their SHIFT model without expecting a so-cheap model like the Asus Eee PC to be produced.  The increasing popularity of Asustek Computer’s Eee PC has resulted in a significant impact on the development of UMPCs (ultra mobile PCs).   The Asus Eee series come cheap and it may force HTC to adjust its deployment of UMPC products.

HTC will have to strengthen users’ Internet experience through mobile devices like the Shift and their up and coming new MID (Mobile Internet Device) products, which will be using Intel’s Atom and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset platforms.  On the new MIDs, HTC should place emphasis on how they are going to be priced.   One wrong move, and the MIDs will be collecting dust in no time.

Among all the excellent features that come with a device, the wrong price can just kill it on the spot.  I am sure Apple spent hours brainstorming on the right price for the iPhone 3G long before it was launched.

PRICE is the weapon that will be used over and over again.

ASUS M930W - THE NOKIA E90 CHALLENGER !

December 26th, 2007 Mike Hornet Posted in ASUS, NOKIA, PDA PHONES, SMARTPHONES, WINDOWS MOBILE No Comments »

Here are the photos from GPSandCo on the ASUS M930W which I was not able to post yesterday using the offline MOBLOG program:

asus-m930w-alls.JPG

The specs reprinted here:

  • processor: Marvel PXA270M running at 520 Mhz
  • tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900 Mhz), GPRS, EDGE, 3G (2100 Mhz) and HSDPA at 3,6 Mbps
  • ROM: 256 MB, RAM: 128 MB
  • Wi-Fi 802.11b/g
  • Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
  • camera: 3.2 megapixel with auto-focus
  • MicroSD card slot compatible with SDHC
  • Mini USB 1.1
  • But the specs above may be wrong.  They claimed that it is going to be Windows Mobile 6 Professional but the screenshots show Windows Mobile 6 STANDARD.  So you be the judge on the authenticity of the information.

Asus is now pushing its Windows Mobile range after its success with the Asus Eee PC notebook.

ASUS P750 - THE KAISER / TyTN II KILLER ?

November 21st, 2007 Mike Hornet Posted in ASUS, HTC, PDA PHONES, TyTN II, WINDOWS MOBILE 15 Comments »

ASUS IS COMING BACK STRONGER …. WITH THE P750

IS THIS GOING TO BE THE KAISER/TyTN II KILLER?

    p750

The P750 has no QWERTY keypad other than your regular numeric keypad with a joystick navigator and shortcut keys. Its 3-megapixel camera with autofocus is good enough for namecard scanning. The P750 comes with the same GPS chip (SiRFstar III) used in the Dopod U1000/HTC Advantage so it should be of very good quality. Other goodies in the P750 is HSDPA connectivity, 256MB flash memory.  Its design  looks like a smartphone but is packed with enough features to challenge the Kaiser/TyTN II.  I wonder why Asus has packed this device with 64MB RAM while the current benchmark is 128MB.

If you are in Malaysia you may be able to view…touch…and get a hands-on experience of the Asus flagship model.  So hop over to Penang’s GURNEY PLAZA (Ground Floor) tomorrow for the experience.  I heard the promotion will be on from 22- 25 Nov 2007 from 10:30 am to 9:30 pm.

In a nutshell this is what the P750 has to offer:

    • HSDPA
    • SiRF Star III GPS
    • Wi-Fi (b/g)
    • 3.0MP Camera (with Auto Focus)
    • 2.6″ QVGA Touchscreen
    • Forward facing video calling camera
    • 520Mhz Intel PXA270 CPU
    • 256MB ROM
    • 64MB RAM
    • External microSD slot
    • Smartphone-style keypad with backspace button
    • 1300 mAh battery

Wanna know the price? It’s cheaper than the TyTN II !
