HTC ASIA LOWERS PRICES FOR TyTN II, TOUCH, CRUISE, DUAL, SHIFT

June 14th, 2008 Mike Hornet Posted in HTC, PDA PHONES, Shift, Touch, Touch Dual, TyTN II No Comments »

THE US$199-iPHONE 3G HAS CAUSED HAVOC TO SMARTPHONE PRICES!

Apple’s announcement of a US$199 price for the new 3G iPhone has shaken up smartphone makers.

HTC’s stock, which is listed in Taiwan, plunged after Apple’s announcement over fears the iPhone’s price will undercut HTC’s smartphone prices.

newprice.JPG

Do not be misled that the iPhone is so very US$199-cheap.  It is not, when you add the 24-month contract you have to sign to get the iPhone.  Anyway, HTC Asia is going for a price reduction with immediate effect on the following models to combat the share price slide.

  • HTC TyTN II – S$998/- (RM2,599)
  • HTC Touch Cruise – S$968/- (RM2,599)
  • HTC Touch Dual – S$848/- (RM2,299)
  • HTC Touch – S$588/- (RM1,499)
  • HTC Shift – S$2,048/- (RM5,499)
  • HTC P3300 – S$588/- (RM1,599)

Note: The Malaysian price (RM….) indicated is not a currency conversion price from the Singapore price (S$).  It is the actual revised selling price for Malaysia.

All the above are effective immediately for the Asian market.  There might be some variants in pricing in each country.

THE PRICE WAR HAS JUST BEGUN…LETS SEE HOW IT WILL END.

WHAT DEVICE WILL BE LAUNCHED ON MAY 6? RAPHAEL? DIAMOND?

April 21st, 2008 Mike Hornet Posted in HTC, PDA PHONES, TyTN II No Comments »

All of us are wondering what is in store for us at the HTC May 6 London launch.

Could it be the TyTN III aka RAPHAEL?  See image labelled “May6?”.   There are 3 images labelled “May6″… which may be the designs for 3 new product releases.  One most likely release will be the HTC DIAMOND which is running on HTC Manila user interface, but may not come with a keyboard as earlier reported.

THE AWESOME TyTN II … STILL HOLDING POLE POSITION

January 16th, 2008 Mike Hornet Posted in HTC, PDA PHONES, TyTN II, WINDOWS MOBILE No Comments »

tilt-tytn-ii.JPG

TyTN II - FIRST IMPRESSION

The TyTN II like its predecessor the Dopod 838 Pro is still holding the lead in terms of a feature-rich PDA phone.  When the Dopod 838 Pro was released in the market, I authored one thread (in a Malaysian forum) specially for this remarkable device and the amount of hits went into the hundreds of thousand.  This shows the popularity of this kind of device and what the end-users desire for.

I believe HTC heard all your voices and come out with an improved model in the form of the TyTN II.

When I first got my hands on the TyTN II, I told myself this is one awesome device.  Prior to its release I was already reading as much as I can on this device and that alone created my desire to get hold of one.  Imagine with all the positive data in your head and holding the device itself, you suddenly get yourself in a state of euphoria.  For those who have not seen this device, I suggest you go to your neighbourhood store to check it out.  Most stores should carry this popular device.

The metallic and chrome finish of the body gives it a very professional look.  It will add power to your image.

What impressed me is the tilt screen  mechanism.  I was not in favour of a flat-sliding keypad (like the Dopod 838 Pro) as you can’t stand it on your desk or table.  This tilting feature reminds me of the good ol’ HP clamshell Palmtop.  It will be easier to view the screen without holding it all the time, especially if you are in a meeting.   This makes it look like a mini UMPC.  I must say the tilt makes it more functionable.

Until today, the demand for the TyTN II is still not slowing down.  The TyTN II which is also known as the Kaiser is still continuing its reign.

The downside on this device to me is that HTC had not listened hard enough.  HTC should have added a VGA screen instead.  With a VGA screen, it would have fulfil the customers’ wishlist.

The backlighted keyboard makes typing in the dark easier.  Though the key buttons are rather small, you can still type at quite a good speed.  But I don’t recommend typing very long documents with it.  It is a mobile device so it should do very well for all your mobile work.

To be continued….INSIDE THE TyTN II

WOULD YOU PAIR THE AT&T Tilt (TyTN II) WITH THE HTC ADVANTAGE X7501 (Dopod U1000) OR THE HTC Shift WITH THE TyTN II ?

December 17th, 2007 Mike Hornet Posted in HTC, PDA PHONES, Shift, TyTN II 7 Comments »

Until the availability of the HTC Shift,  I still believe the AT&T Tilt (HTC TyTN II) and the HTC Advantage X7501 (Dopod U1000) are the best in its class.

But to pair the AT&T Tilt (TyTN II) with the HTC Advantage X7501 (Dopod U1000) is something else as the features will be redundant.  In my opinion I would say the HTC Shift and the TyTN II make a more useful and practical pair.

Anyway, Jenn K Lee of Pocketables has come up with an interesting review on why the AT&T Tilt (HTC TyTN II) and the HTC Advantage X7501 (Dopod U1000) are a harmonious pair:

htc_advantage_tilt.jpg

” One of the reasons I bought an AT&T Tilt (HTC TyTN II) is that I needed to downgrade my HTC Advantage X7501, which recently proved to be too big and unwieldy for primary cell phone use while traveling. As I explained in my first impressions piece, my search for a smaller yet still powerful mobile device ended with the Tilt.

Although I carry the Tilt with me more easily and frequently, it hasn’t completely replaced the Advantage. In fact, while packing my carry-on for a flight to Los Angeles today, it was with no hesitation that I grabbed both devices and headed out the door.

At a glance and aside from their obvious difference in size, it’s easy to think of the Advantage and Tilt as being rather redundant. Both run Windows Mobile 6 Professional and share a somewhat similar form factor, after all, so there’s bound to be some definite overlap in functions.

While the devices do have much in common, they are also quite different.

In addition to the specs shown above, the Tilt and Advantage differ in some of their preinstalled software. For example, the Advantage comes with both Internet Explorer Mobile (IEM) and Opera Mobile; the Tilt ships with just IEM. Conversely, the Tilt has Sprite Backup and a pile of AT&T crapware while the Advantage does not.

advantage_tilt_keyboard.jpg

COMPLEMENTARY USAGE

The cumulative strength in these differences is what allows me to use both devices not just separately, but together.

My only activated SIM is now devoted to the Tilt, so doing anything phone- or HSDPA-related on the Advantage is no longer possible. Because of its versatility and capabilities, though, the limited connectivity (wi-fi and Bluetooth are still available) actually doesn’t negatively impact its usage scenarios.

In fact, even with no connectivity, the two units still manage to complement each other nicely:
• While I wrote this on the plane this afternoon, my husband partially recreated my previous mobile entertainment scenario with the Advantage after his PMP’s battery died. Seeing him play some of my favorite Windows Mobile games made me put my Vaio TZ aside and play the same games on the Tilt. We were able to compare techniques and challenge each other without having to wirelessly connect (impossible to do on a plane, anyway).
• Since the Advantage has a massive 8GB microdrive, I routinely use it as testing ground for applications and various utilities. Running out of space is never an issue, so I don’t have to be picky about what to install. I can connect to my computer just once and come away with tons of new programs to try. Only the best ones make it to the Tilt.
• Because the units have different processors, I’m able to determine whether a particular program runs slowly on its own or just because it needs more horsepower. If it’s the latter, then I can still use it on the Advantage (rather than not use it at all). This minimizes the possibility of foolishly writing off what is actually an excellent app just because the Tilt can’t handle it.
• Similarly, some programs don’t yet support VGA natively. Before buying the Tilt, I had to pass on a lot of great titles that either only supported QVGA resolutions or displayed VGA scaled (yuck!). Now it’s like having the best of both worlds: power-hungry apps on the Advantage, QVGA-only apps on the Tilt.
• The Advantage can both use and be used as a Bluetooth modem. This means that I could actually use the Tilt as a modem for the Advantage. Normally, I use the Advantage as a modem for my Vaio TZ, so being able to use the Tilt for the Advantage is kind of baffling. I haven’t had any reason to test it out yet, but it’s nice to know that it could be done. VGA browsing, while not ideal, is certainly much better than QVGA browsing.

They’re quite a pair, aren’t they? ”

You have read it, so what do you think?

IS THE O2 STELLAR BETTER THAN THE TyTN II ?

November 26th, 2007 Mike Hornet Posted in HTC, O2, PDA PHONES, TyTN II 1 Comment »

PROS AND CONS OF THE O2 STELLAR

The O2 Stellar is the HTC Kaiser variant, same as the HTC TyTN II.  If the O2 Stellar is placed next to the HTC TyTN II, which will you choose?

tytnstellar

Read the Stellar O2 comments from 4winmobile and be the judge:

Pro

Fast processor
Large memory
Inbuilt GPS
Active Keyboard
3G Quad band
Comfortable in the hand
Good quality screen
Loud Volume
Strong
Jog wheel
battery lock
Usable keyboard
Tiling screen
Full size stylus
Sprite Backup included
GPRS Monitor included
Business Card Reader application
Enhanced Headset
Good quality screen
Good battery life
Fast Sat Nav locks
TouchFlo in contacts and Email
CAPS / FN indicators
SDHC capacity microSD
Con

No HTC Home application
Slight screen back light variation
Poor radio receptivity

Whilst we look at the Pros and Cons of the Stellar it is well worth considering the slight differences between the O2 machine and other variants of the Kaiser design offered by other airtime carriers.

O2 have decided not to include the popular HTC Home application but do include their own O2 today applets which whilst very phone biased do offer a lot of added functionality. Remember you can always download and add the HTC Home applet if you so wish.

The enhances headset is only offered by HTC and O2 - other carriers supply the basic headset.

Spb GPRS Monitor and Sprite backup included free of charge. The later especially is a superb bonus program that can save you from disaster!
